La Jolla Rough Water Swim – Sept. 12, 2010

August 24, 2010 | By | 3 Replies More

I wasn’t planning to post on this blog today, but you know what John Lennon said: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

Today’s agenda changed when some Facebook friends commented on a photo of the Rough Water Swim on my FB profile page this morning. When I looked at the picture I noticed the caption: “The La Jolla Rough Water Swim is held on the first Sunday in September.”

Ooops. Not so. For reasons unbeknown to me, this year’s event will take place on September 12, the second Sunday in the month.

In any case, if you’re in town, don’t miss it. More than 2,000 swimmers compete in various age groups. They swim from the La Jolla Cove to a buoy in the bay and back. It’s a tremendous sight to behold.

BTW, here’s the link to the photo on Facebook. I also have a La Jolla Travel Information FB page

If you’re a Facebook person, I’d be really pleased if you’d go to this page and “like” it.

About the Author ()

I live in La Jolla and I'm a travel writer, so in addition to enjoying my home town's great weather, beautiful surroundings, and range of cultural and recreational options, I also see La Jolla - and the rest of San Diego - as a travel destination. And what I see sometimes drives me batty. People vacation in La Jolla, but don't take advantage of everything our community offers, so I decided to start this blog and provide insider advice for out-of-towners. Hey. I figure if I can write insider tips about exotic destinations on Authentic Luxury Travel, I ought to be able to lead readers off the beaten path that starts just outside my front door. In the process, I'm having fun revisiting my favorite places and discovering some new ones. Travel writers are naturally snoopy, and this blog is my excuse to have a good ol' sticky beak around my home town. I hope you find it helpful. If you are coming to La Jolla or another area of San Diego and would like my help in planning your trip, please read "Need Help Planning Your Trip" and then email me at ehansen298@aol.com. Great! I competed in the annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim years ago as a kid still have my medals from several years. Johnny Weissmuller coached me (he and gorgeous wife Allene were our neighbors and my parents’ best friends); we all went …to La J every year. They, with their friend Dutch Smith (was he mayor of La J?) had a ball together and rooted — Johnny did his Tarzan call, natch — so i HAD to rank tops. Great memores. And that water was delicious for swimming. So very distant from base New York where I have been living…traveling often to swim in calmer, warmer waters along Mexican coasts.

Johnny wanted to train me for the 100 and 400-yard freelstyle (among his Olympic records), but sprinting Johnny style, head up (!) was exhausting, so I complained to my father. I loved ocean swimming and my father had the great idea (my salvation from pool tortures) of the La Jolla Rough Water Mile Swim. Johnny was in favor, and it was our annual joy. They all sat cheering for me (while enjoying martinis of course), and I remember the thrill of staggering up onto that beach and into their arms.

  3. Frank,

Thank you for sharing these very special memories.

    Best regards,
    Elizabeth
