Scripps Inn, La Jolla

March 3, 2013 | By | 1 Reply More

Scripps Inn, La Jolla offers 14 “beachy” units right across Coast Boulevard from the ocean.

If you’ve been to San Diego’s favorite coastal community, you may have driven right past the Scripps Inn, La Jolla without even noticing it. The big blue Pacific Ocean on the other side of Coast Boulevard gets all the attention in this part of town. The yummy eye candy of waves rolling up on pristine beaches grabs much more attention than a taupe two-story building.

You definitely wouldn’t notice the inn on a day when a wedding was taking place in the picturesque grassy bowl between the road and the water’s edge. Given the location, it’s no surprise that bridal parties and their guests often book all 14 of the spacious rooms at the Scripps Inn, La Jolla.

Destination weddings are understandably popular in this part of San Diego, and many couples find the combo of the Scripps Inn, Cuvier Park (“Wedding Bowl”), and the nearby Cuvier Club (a great place for a reception) too hard to resist.

Pristine beaches are the highlight of the La Jolla, California, coastline.

In fact, it’s the location and low-key atmosphere that makes the Scripps Inn, La Jolla so popular. In addition to the ocean view, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla is in the next block; the Children’s Pool, with its seal colony, is nearby; and the La Jolla Cove is about a 10-minute walk along the coast.

The harbor seal rookery at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla is a popular attraction.

The building dates from the 1930s when it housed the staff of the original Scripps Hospital on Prospect Street. Today, five beachy units come with kitchens (including three two-bedroom suites), and all but three units offer full ocean views. Two junior suites have fireplaces, and the Vista Ocean Suite includes a private balcony, living room, dining area, and kitchen.

The friendly staff sets out a complimentary light continental breakfast in the office every morning and is happy to provide advice about local attractions. Wi-fi is also free.

Insider tips:

  •  To get the best rate, check the Scripps Inn, La Jolla website or Facebook page a month ahead of your arrival.
  • Reserve one of the quieter upstairs rooms.

About the Author ()

I live in La Jolla and I'm a travel writer, so in addition to enjoying my home town's great weather, beautiful surroundings, and range of cultural and recreational options, I also see La Jolla - and the rest of San Diego - as a travel destination. And what I see sometimes drives me batty. People vacation in La Jolla, but don't take advantage of everything our community offers, so I decided to start this blog and provide insider advice for out-of-towners. Hey. I figure if I can write insider tips about exotic destinations on Authentic Luxury Travel, I ought to be able to lead readers off the beaten path that starts just outside my front door. In the process, I'm having fun revisiting my favorite places and discovering some new ones. Travel writers are naturally snoopy, and this blog is my excuse to have a good ol' sticky beak around my home town. I hope you find it helpful. If you are coming to La Jolla or another area of San Diego and would like my help in planning your trip, please read "Need Help Planning Your Trip" and then email me at ehansen298@aol.com.
