The Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, California

The Lodge at Torrey Pines overlooks the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

If I ever run away from home it will be to The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

This award-winning hotel is not far from our front door, but when I’m there, I feel like I’m a world away. Perched on the edge of the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course with the ocean as a backdrop, The Lodge is a gracious retreat – an easy place to escape and relax.

Unlike hotels in the village, The Lodge sprawls across six and a half acres on a bluff above the Pacific. The site provides space for 170 rooms and suites, a spa with 14 treatment rooms, an expansive lawn for yoga classes and croquet, a pool with underwater music, and beautiful gardens bursting with native plants.

From the pool, guests have a view over the golf course to the ocean.

As if that wasn’t enough, Torrey Pines State Reserve is within walking distance and complimentary guided hikes are offered twice a day.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is a great place to enjoy a completely California experience. It features authentic California Craftsman architecture and furnishings, reflecting a style that was popular in the Golden State in the early 1900s.

In A. R. Valentien, the hotel’s signature restaurant, the menu changes frequently based on the availability of locally-sourced produce, as well as seafood and meats. Chef Jeff Jackson uses these ingredients to create flavorful, innovative dishes. Likewise, only California wines are offered. Even the name of the restaurant is Californian: Albert Robert Valentien was an early 20th-century Impressionist, and The Lodge displays his work throughout the property.

The Lodge displays a large collection of the work of Albert Robert Valentien an early 20th-century Impressionist.

On Thursday evenings, Chef Jackson interacts with guests at a communal Artisan Table on the deck at A. R. Valentien. In addition, The Grill at Torrey Pines offers casual meals daily and hosts quarterly craft beer dinners where local brews are paired with seasonal cuisine.

The spa at The Lodge also incorporates local ingredients. Lemon grass and sage, which grow in the Torrey Pines Reserve, add fragrance and benefits to their soaps and lotions.

Every guest room at The Lodge at Torrey Pines has a patio or balcony; 37 have a fireplace; and the two presidential suites have kitchens. Wi-fi is complimentary, as are weekend yoga classes, croquet, and cabanas around the heated pool. The Lodge also offers guests guaranteed  tee times at the Torrey Pines Golf Course and offers special golf packages.

And most of all, The Lodge offers a view, a level of service, and a cozy ambience that make it the perfect place to escape.

The architecture and furnishings at The Lodge are in the California Craftsman style.

About the Author ()

I live in La Jolla and I'm a travel writer, so in addition to enjoying my home town's great weather, beautiful surroundings, and range of cultural and recreational options, I also see La Jolla - and the rest of San Diego - as a travel destination. And what I see sometimes drives me batty. People vacation in La Jolla, but don't take advantage of everything our community offers, so I decided to start this blog and provide insider advice for out-of-towners. Hey. I figure if I can write insider tips about exotic destinations on Authentic Luxury Travel, I ought to be able to lead readers off the beaten path that starts just outside my front door. In the process, I'm having fun revisiting my favorite places and discovering some new ones. Travel writers are naturally snoopy, and this blog is my excuse to have a good ol' sticky beak around my home town. I hope you find it helpful. If you are coming to La Jolla or another area of San Diego and would like my help in planning your trip, please read "Need Help Planning Your Trip" and then email me at ehansen298@aol.com. I love this place. We always take our houseguests there for a tour of the hotel and the grounds, a breakfast, a lunch or a dinner. We never tire of the place. It’s a museum as well as a fine dining place – both restaurants are wonderful – all depends on how much money you want to spend. Please add a picture of the front entrance.

    • Hello Mary Anne!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We appreciate your loyalty to the Lodge at Torrey Pines. We can not wait to welcome you and your guests back again soon. If you would like a photo of the entrance to our hotel, please feel free to look on our Facebook or e-mail me personally and I will send you one.

      Well wishes,

A point of interest: In order to truly understand the hotel is to previously visit the Gamble house in Pasadena. My husband, Joe, who did his undergraduate work at Cal Tech in Pasadena beafore he got his doctorate at Scripps at UCLA before UCSD existed, has been endeared to Pasadena. But aside from that, being locals in La Jolla, somehow we learned about locals in Rancho Santa Fe, who had to relocate, overnight, from their homes during the fires in that area, decided to go to The Lodge, were welcomed with an unbelievable discount to stay there. Turned out that the owner of the hotel lives in Rancho Santa Fe. How gracious he was! However, despite that fact, he provided for them. Hail to him!
