Hotel La Jolla, San Diego, California

January 3, 2013 | By | Reply More

Hotel La Jolla is located just a few blocks from La Jolla Shores Beach.

I’d like to introduce my charming new neighbor: Hotel La Jolla, a Kimpton Hotel, moved in across the street last summer, and is a wonderful addition to our area.

My friends and I walk over for drinks in Hiatus, their cozy patio lounge, and dine in Cusp on the 11th floor. I’ve lived in La Jolla, San Diego’s favorite coastal community, for most of my life, and I’ve never known a hotel to be so warmly received by the local population.

If you’ve been following La Jolla Travel Information for a while, you know that Kimpton acquired an existing hotel in 2011 and completely reconfigured the property. For what seemed like forever, heavy equipment and men on scaffolds were de rigueur. I attended a hard-hat media tour in June 2012, and it looked to me like they needed another six months, but – voila! – the hotel opened with great fanfare in August.

The boutique property offers 110 chic guest rooms (each with a balcony or patio), a small (but stylish) swimming pool, Cusp Dining & Drinks, Hiatus, a fitness room, an ocean view (above the fifth floor), and easy proximity to La Jolla Shores Beach. Even better: the hotel is eco-, family-, and pet-friendly.

Friendly staff welcome guests to Hotel La Jolla’s chic “living room.”

Hotel La Jolla is such a good neighbor that they’ve formed a partnership with nearby Surf Diva and Birch Aquarium at Scripps to make it easy for guests to learn about the surrounding marine environment.

The village area of La Jolla (think galleries, shops, and restaurants) is less than a mile away. The La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool, where seals and sea lions hang out, are adjacent to the village. The Torrey Pines Golf Course, Torrey Pines Glider Port, and University of California San Diego (UCSD) are within a few miles.

Cusp Dining & Drinks, located on the top floor of the hotel, offers coastal Mediterranean cuisine from Chef Donald Lockhart. Here the emphasis is on fresh seafood, such as grilled salmon crusted in Moroccan spices or halibut roasted to perfection. Rustic flatbreads from the pizza oven and savory sides complement the house made pastas and entrées.

What could be better than a new neighbor that serves creative cocktails, offers delicious meals, and forms great friendships in the community?

Cusp Dining & Drinks is located on the 11th floor of Hotel La Jolla, a Kimpton Hotel.

About the Author ()

I live in La Jolla and I'm a travel writer, so in addition to enjoying my home town's great weather, beautiful surroundings, and range of cultural and recreational options, I also see La Jolla - and the rest of San Diego - as a travel destination. And what I see sometimes drives me batty. People vacation in La Jolla, but don't take advantage of everything our community offers, so I decided to start this blog and provide insider advice for out-of-towners. Hey. I figure if I can write insider tips about exotic destinations on Authentic Luxury Travel, I ought to be able to lead readers off the beaten path that starts just outside my front door. In the process, I'm having fun revisiting my favorite places and discovering some new ones. Travel writers are naturally snoopy, and this blog is my excuse to have a good ol' sticky beak around my home town. I hope you find it helpful. If you are coming to La Jolla or another area of San Diego and would like my help in planning your trip, please read "Need Help Planning Your Trip" and then email me at ehansen298@aol.com.
