La Jolla Learn to Surf
Is “learn to surf” on your La Jolla wish list? If so, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with lots of locals – because surfing is a popular preoccupation in my hometown.
As I mentioned on our sister site Authentic Luxury Travel, when the surf’s up in La Jolla, so is high school truancy. And it’s not just a teen thing. My friends who live on the street above Black’s Beach regularly witness the early-morning phenomenon of grown men standing next to their cars peeling off wetsuits and slipping into business suits before heading downtown to their offices.
Surf Diva is the best place to learn to surf in La Jolla – in all of San Diego, for that matter. This legendary school was the world’s first surf school for women and girls and has been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, and USA Today, as well on the Today Show. Newsweek called Surf Diva “The Starbucks of surf schools.”
In recent years, by popular demand, Surf Diva has also begun helping boys and men learn to surf. Some are trying this increasingly popular sport for the first time. Lessons – from beginner to advanced – take place at La Jolla Shores Beach, which K Rob already mentioned is the best place in La Jolla to learn to surf.
La Jollans Coco and Izzy Tihanyi opened Surf Diva in 1996. The twin sisters grew up surfing La Jolla Shores and love all things beach and ocean. Their instructors share this passion and their talent for teaching.
If you want to learn to surf in La Jolla, it’s best to make a reservation for a private lesson, a group lesson, or a clinic at least 24 hours in advance. It’s sometimes possible for Surf Diva to accommodate walk-ins, but that’s not guaranteed.
Be sure to bring sunscreen, a bathing suit, water, and “a smile.” Surf Diva will provide a surf board, and you can rent a wet suit for a nominal fee if one is required.
Now before you say “I’m not in shape to learn to surf,” remember that Surf Diva instructors are trained to work with people of all ages and skill levels – and the school’s motto is “The best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun.”
It’s not about looking good, and it’s not about competition. It’s about having fun, meeting new people, and learning something that is life-enriching,” the sisters say.
Surf Diva can help you learn to surf year round, but their popular residential one-week camps (“boarding schools”) take place only in summer when they can use nearby dorms at UCSD (University of California San Diego).
Prefer to learn to stand-up paddle board? Surf Diva teaches SUP at La Jolla Shores, too. And they host surf camps in Costa Rica and Fiji. You can find out more on the Surf Diva Web site or by calling 858-454-8273.
