Free Things To Do In La Jolla, California, In September
September is a great time to be in San Diego. The big summer crowds are gone and the weather is great. In addition, there are plenty of free things to do in La Jolla, San Diego’s favorite coastal community.
Saturday, September 8 – Mirror Mirror will be shown in Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove at 7:30pm. This film is rated PG so you can bring the whole family for the screening under the stars. This fresh retelling of the classic Snow White legend stars Lily Collins (The Blind Side) and Oscar winner Julia Roberts. This event is part of the San Diego Film Festival that will take place September 27-30 at the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla.
Sunday, September 9 – The Rough Water Swim will take place at La Jolla Cove from 9am – 3pm. This annual event has been held since 1916 and attracts more than 2,000 swimmers. It’s the top race of its kind in the country. You can try to squeeze into the crowd around the Cove or find a view spot in one of the nearby restaurants. Brockton Villa has a good view, as does The Steakhouse at Azul.
Saturday, September 15 – Haute La Jolla Nights will take place in the village from 6 – 9pm. Musical groups will play in shops and galleries. Some of my favorite stores are participating, including Muttropolis and Warwick’s Books and Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy and Geppetto’s Toys and We Olive La Jolla (all on Girard Avenue).
Any time – Stop at the entrance booth at UCSD and pick up a brochure about The Stuart Collection of outdoor art. I can’t think of a better way to pass a few hours than walking around the beautiful campus locating and admiring the creative works. The 18th piece “Fallen Star” was added last November. It’s a three-quarter-sized version of a small house perched on the top of the seven-story Jacobs School of Engineering building.
Every Sunday – The La Jolla Open Aire Market isn’t just a place to buy produce and flowers. I’ve purchased some great jewelry and picked up unusual gifts. It’s open – rain or shine – 9am to 1pm on the playground of La Jolla Elementary on Girard Avenue.
