La Valencia, a La Jolla landmark since 1926, offers guests a gorgeous ocean view.

La Valencia – La Jolla Hotel Deal     Stay Longer, Spend Less

Now through June 30, 15-20% off two nights, 20-25% off three nights or more.

Discount is dependent on dates and accommodation selection. Blackout dates apply.

La Valencia, with its pink exterior, is almost synonymous with La Jolla. The luxury hotel has occupied a prominent place on Prospect Street since 1926 when it was a popular hideaway for Hollywood celebrities.

“La V” also plays an important role in the La Jolla community, and locals – like me – feel somewhat territorial about it. Over the years, I’ve been relieved that the renovations that have kept La Valencia up-to-date have managed to preserve its Spanish colonial design and old world ambience.

La Sala at La Valencia is a cozy place for a drink or afternoon tea.

La Sala at La Valencia – the gracious living room with the drop-dead gorgeous ocean view – is the “happy place” I travel to during yoga, and I’m just not sure what I’d do if someone took a wrecking ball to it. In fact, when I heard recently that new alterations were in the works, I kind of got my back up that no one had consulted with me.

Over lunch, General Manager Mark Dibella put my fears to rest. He told me that La Valencia’s guest rooms have already been refurbished, and the newly-designed entryway and patio will be completed by July. The entry colonnade is being rebuilt for safety reasons and the patio is getting a pergola.

La Valencia’s 112 rooms have a charming “fresh vintage” decor.

The major remodel of the Whaling Bar and Café La Rue, which eliminates the bar and expands the bistro, will be finished by Labor Day. Many La Jollans were horrified when it was announced that their beloved Whaling Bar was on the chopping block but, having seen the plans, I think they will love the more contemporary-European look of the new Café La Rue. A sidewalk entrance from Prospect Street and java from a popular local source could very well make this La Jolla’s next go-to spot.

The former Sky Room Restaurant on the 10th-floor is slated to become two luxurious one-bedroom suites by the end of this year. I’m already jealous of the guests who get to wake up to the panorama from this perch.

The biggest surprise? “We’re building a spa with eight treatment rooms.”

Since the spa won’t open until spring 2014, I’ll tell you about it later. In the meantime, hurry and take advantage of the La Valencia  – La Jolla Hotel Deal…because it really is a good deal.

About the Author ()

I live in La Jolla and I'm a travel writer, so in addition to enjoying my home town's great weather, beautiful surroundings, and range of cultural and recreational options, I also see La Jolla - and the rest of San Diego - as a travel destination. And what I see sometimes drives me batty. People vacation in La Jolla, but don't take advantage of everything our community offers, so I decided to start this blog and provide insider advice for out-of-towners. Hey. I figure if I can write insider tips about exotic destinations on Authentic Luxury Travel, I ought to be able to lead readers off the beaten path that starts just outside my front door. In the process, I'm having fun revisiting my favorite places and discovering some new ones. Travel writers are naturally snoopy, and this blog is my excuse to have a good ol' sticky beak around my home town. I hope you find it helpful. If you are coming to La Jolla or another area of San Diego and would like my help in planning your trip, please read "Need Help Planning Your Trip" and then email me at ehansen298@aol.com.
